How the removal of nitrates and sulfates from water works

Nitrate, nitrite, and sulfate filtration using the HydroTreat ELITE Nitrate device operates on the principle of ion exchange. Water passes through the filter medium ANEX Pure, which captures nitrate, nitrite, and sulfate ions and replaces them with chlorides.

After the filter medium's capacity is exhausted, the device automatically regenerates using a salt solution. During regeneration, the resin releases the captured ions and is re-saturated with chlorides, making it ready for further water treatment.

When designing the equipment, it is important to know the current levels of nitrates, nitrites, sulfates, and chlorides in the water. After treatment, the chloride content may increase, so it is advisable to size the equipment based on a water analysis.

Why address nitrates, nitrites, and sulfates in water?

Nitrates (NO₃⁻) and nitrites (NO₂⁻) can be found in water, especially in areas with intensive agricultural activity, the use of nitrogen fertilizers, or contamination around wells.

They can occur naturally in small amounts, but their elevated levels can deteriorate the quality of drinking water. When hygiene limits are exceeded, the water may be unsuitable for drinking, especially for more sensitive user groups.

Sulfates (SO₄²⁻) can affect the taste of water and at higher levels may cause technical or sensory issues. Therefore, it is always important to base assessments of well water on current water analysis.

Operation and Maintenance of the ELITE Series

HydroTreat ELITE Nitrate is an automatic device that operates without complex handling after proper setup. The control unit monitors operational data and initiates the regeneration of the filtration material as needed.

Regular maintenance mainly involves the regular addition of regeneration salt to the brine tank. Other processes, including regeneration, occur automatically.

Thanks to counterflow regeneration and a dry brine tank, the operation is more economical, hygienic, and requires less maintenance.
